Orange County SC goalkeeper Charlie Lyon has been named to USL’s Team of the Week for Week 9, the league announced on Tuesday.
Lyon, in his first season with OCSC, earns his first Team of the Week honor of the season, after making eight saves. Of those, he made a huge penalty stop after Oscar Sorto’s ejection midway through the first half, in what turned out to be a 1-0 loss for Orange County to OKC Energy FC on the road.
And in part that’s what makes the honor rather impressive. Lyon did have a good night in Oklahoma City, bouncing back nicely after enduring a tough outing the week before against Tulsa. But with 30 teams in USL these days and just 11 players on the Team of the Week, giving the nod to a goalkeeper whose team actually lost is rather unusual. Still, good for Lyon, who again deserved some recognition even if the team couldn’t manage a result in the game.
In addition, Lyon is up for USL Save of the Week, which you can vote for on USL’s website. Right now, he’s leading Jake McGuire (a Chivas USA academy product) and Evan Louro, but the way to ensure he wins is to vote for him.
Congrats to Charlie and best of luck on the Save of the Week vote.
