U.S. beats Martinique, but struggles to do so

The U.S. eked out a win against Martinique 3-2, in the second game of their Gold Cup campaign on Wednesday. Despite getting the result, it was hardly the performance that anyone was looking for. The first half was largely uneventful, but the US failed to push the play like most people thought they should, seeing as how Martinique is a team made up of mostly semi-pro players. The U.S. eventually went ahead 2-0 in the second half, but surprisingly, Martinique scored twice to equalize. Jordan Morris eventually scored the winner later in the second half. While you don’t want to read too much into a Gold Cup game with a U.S. B or C team playing, the fact that they weren’t able to do more against Martinique is troubling.

Leonardo Bonucci looks to be set for shock move to AC Milan

Shocking news came out Thursday morning as it appears that Leonardo Bonucci could be set to leave Juventus, and go to AC Milan, no less. There had been rumors that teams like Chelsea and Manchester City were interested in Bonucci (why wouldn’t they be?) but no real indications that he might leave Juve. Bonucci is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world. Why Juventus would want to sell him, especially to a rival like AC Milan is a mystery. Regardless, if they do sell, Juventus’ loss will definitely be AC Milan’s gain.

Michael Carrick is the new Manchester United captain, is that the right move?

Michael Carrick was named the new club captain of Manchester United, after the post was vacant with the departure of Wayne Rooney. This news elicited a mixed reaction from United fans. Carrick is definitely one of the most experienced United players, and its nice to see him rewarded for his longevity. At the same time, Carrick turns 36 years old this month, and probably wont be at the highest level for very much longer. Scott Patterson explains why United should have gone in a different direction when they chose their captain.

Roster released for MLS Homegrown Game

This year, the MLS Homegrown team will be coached by Brian McBride, and they are taking on the U-20 team of Chivas de Guadalajara in the Homegrown Game. The team is stacked with young talent, like Canadian wonder kid Alphonso Davies, as well as US youngsters Justen Glad, Tyler Adams, and Brook Lennon. New US International Jesse Gonzalez is also on the team. It will be interesting to see how these young MLS players stack up against the youngsters from Chivas.
