How to watch Orange County SC vs. Rio Grande Valley FC

It’s deja vu in a double game week.

MLS: U.S. Open Cup-Orange County SC at LA Galaxy Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Orange County SC play their second game of the week Saturday evening, facing a familiar opponent in Rio Grande Valley FC, at Orange County Great Park at 5 pm PT.

The teams, of course, already played each other this week, with points divided in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday in Texas. Given that factor, this game could have more of a two-legged series feel to it, or it could be another grind. It is the summer and these teams have been a bit shorthanded lately.

On the bright side, OC has gotten good contributions in attack from the likes of Wuilito Fernandes, Monday Etim and Dusan Stevanovic in recent games, and there’s good news in that Jerry van Ewijk, suspended the last three games, is now eligible to play and will almost certainly start in this game. The Dutch attacker is rested and if he gets on another roll it should certainly help Orange County continue their five-game unbeaten run.

Another good sign is that OC’s defense has performed better in recent weeks. Even with two of their last three games being draws, they’ve only given up three goals in the last three games, a much more manageable rate than the 3.5 they let in per game the previous two matches.

The fixtures are coming thick and fast at this stage, and don’t be surprised if Orange County look to grind, or to go back to Oliver Wyss’ old strategy of taking a lead as fast as possible and locking it down defensively the rest of the way. A win here would allow Orange County to leapfrog RGVFC in the standings, so this is a real six-pointer in the playoff race. Will it happen? We’ll find out this evening.

Tale of the Tape:

Orange County SC: 19 points (5-4-4), 11th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -1; Last five games: D-W-D-D-W

Rio Grande Valley FC: 21 points (6-7-3), 10th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -3; Last five games: D-L-W-L-L-
