Orange County SC will try to go for lucky number seven on Saturday, hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 with a six-game unbeaten streak on the line. It’s the first meeting between the teams this season, but they’ll be meeting twice more in the year so this will be an interesting match.
Orange County is resurgent at the moment, coming off a big win last week at home and knocking at the door of the Western Conference playoff slots. They still have more than half their season to go, but if they continue to pick up results more often than not, they should firmly end up in the playoffs. A win tonight would most likely vault them above the line into the slots.
Vancouver have been kind of all over the place this season. Many of their key contributors have either spent more time with Vancouver’s MLS side this year, or they are hurt or they had slowly trickled over to FC Cincinnati to follow former Whitecaps 2 head coach Alan Koch.
Like most MLS2 teams, their roster includes players with a fair amount of USL experience as well as a number of virtual unknowns, youngsters and prospects trying to prove themselves to the organization. MLS first team player Marco Bustos is pacing the team with five goals in league play this season, and he’s certainly a player to keep an eye on if he features.
This certainly seems like a winnable match-up for Orange County, but you never know, especially against a team not yet faced this late in the season. A win will keep the momentum going, and ensure the games in hand banked up are paying off.
Tale of the Tape:
