Los Angeles Football Club unveiled Carlos Vela, complete with his own “VELA” T-shirt in the style of the LAFC winged crest, on Friday in a press conference at the California Science Center, next door to the team’s Banc of California Stadium.
Vela spoke to the supporters and media in attendance, which you can watch above on the team’s stream of the event from the morning. In addition to Vela, LAFC general manager John Thorrington, head coach Bob Bradley, president Tom Penn, managing owners Larry Berg, Bennett Rosenthal and Brandon Beck, and celebrity co-owners Will Ferrell and Tony Robbins were present.
Vela and Thorrington spoke in English and Spanish, while Penn, Bradley and Berg spoke in English. Members of The 3252 serenaded Vela during the press conference.
As you’ll notice, Ferrell made a gag of presenting Vela his jersey, as is customary in these events, holding up an invisible jersey because LAFC has not released one yet for the debut season in 2018. Instead, he was given a “VELA” T-shirt, which you can conveniently purchase on LAFC’s online store. You gotta admit, making the first big name signing be a player with “LA” in his last name was quite the stroke of fate.
