It’s been a long time since any player from Orange County SC was named to the USL Team of the Week proper. Some of that has been more inconsistent results of late, some of it has been players being overlooked in a 30-team league.
But the team finally has a player back in the week’s best XI, as defender Sola Abolaji was named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 22.
Abolaji, who made his competitive debut in the game for Orange County, came off the bench and played the final 10 minutes in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Phoenix Rising FC. Most notably, he scored the equalizer in the 89th minute to ensure OC grabbed a vital point.
Not sure if this is the shortest shift ever put in to merit USL Team of the Week recognition, but it has to be up there. I would imagine Logan Pause will give the 32-year-old more minutes in reward of his shift moving forward, which will likely be an equally satisfying reward. Either way, congrats to Sola for the honor.
