Here’s a pretty cool story just before the international break kicks into full gear: Orange County SC have a call-up heading out on duty in forward Wuilito Fernandes.
The rookie, a feel-good story this year as a 27-year-old who battled his way into a professional contract, has been called up for the second time by Cape Verde, as they get set to play a crucial two-game series for 2018 World Cup qualifying in the current FIFA window against African power South Africa.
Cape Verde host South Africa on Friday, before playing the Bafana Bafana in South Africa on Sept. 5. Cape Verde sit in last place at the moment in Group D, but win and a draw or two wins could put them in the reckoning for a spot in Russia next year.
Fernandes has one cap with his native country, earned earlier this year in a friendly, and reports from the African press are that Cape Verde’s FA is in considerable turmoil at the moment. Fernandes looks likely to be a reserve and may or may not get playing time, but with Cape Verde kind of desperate at the moment, he may get a runout to see what he can do, even if it is against a team that will be heavily favored in the home-and-away series.
Best of luck to Wuilito and we’ll see how Cape Verde does from these two games.
