Borja Mayoral opened the scoring for Madrid, before Kevin Rodrigues tied up the score for La Real. But Rodrigues scored an own goal shortly before halftime to put Real Madrid up 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish. Gareth Bale added to the lead in the second half to put the game out of hand.
Los Angeles Football Club’s on-loan striker, Carlos Vela, came off the bench in the 57th minute for Real Sociedad in place of Sergio Canales. It was a quiet shift for Vela, not necessarily surprising given the opponent and game state. And while Vela has played in all of La Real’s competitive games so far this season, he has yet to score in four matches. Given that three of his four appearances have been off the bench, it’s perhaps a mitigating factor in his inability to get off the mark so far this season.
Real Sociedad are in third place in La Liga, one point ahead of Real Madrid through four games. Their next game will be a league fixture on Thursday against promoted side Levante.
