Two of the three goals on the day were golazos, with Chema Rodriguez opening the scoring in the first half with an audacious long-range volley, while Enis Bardhi scored the capper off a direct free kick in the 89th minute. Jose Luis Morales scored the game’s other goal, from the penalty spot.
Of local note, on-loan Los Angeles Football Club forward Carlos Vela started and played the full match for Real Sociedad. It was his second start of the season across all competitions for La Real, and playing in a band of three directly behind the central striker, Vela had a great deal of possession in the area before the 18-yard-box but like the rest of his teammates, he rarely had a chance to impact the game with a chance. Vela has played in every game for his club this season but has yet to register a goal or assist.
The loss slides Real Sociedad down the La Liga table to sixth place, by no means catastrophic but no longer in the heady positions near the very top. Their next match comes quickly, on Sunday at home against Valencia in league play. We’ll see if Vela will get off the mark and if La Real will get back in the win column.
