Los Angeles Football Club’s new striker Carlos Vela started for Mexico in their victory against Panama on Friday night.

Mexico won 1-0, and in doing so clinched their birth in the 2018 World Cup. Vela played 83 minutes before he was substituted for Cesar Montes.

Vela was productive if not spectacular, and its nice to see him still getting time with El Tri.

Mexico has dominated CONCACAF qualifying, and becomes the fifth team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, joining Brazil, Japan, Iran, and Russia, who qualified as the hosts.

Strangely even though this game if won would lead to Mexico qualifying, only 37,000 fans attended the game at Estadio Azteca. Bad weather on the night was probably a factor, but it was strange to see such a low turnout.

Mexico’s next game is Tuesday September 5th against Costa Rica in Costa Rica, hopefully Vela keeps getting the nod for El Tri going forward.
