Paris Saint-Germain defeat Montpellier 4-0, Edinson Cavani scores and becomes PSG’s all time leading scorer

Paris Saint-Germain got back to winning ways, defeating Montpellier 4-0. The first goal was scored by Edinson Cavani, and the goal, his 157th goal for the club, made Cavani PSG’s all-time leading scorer. The Uruguayan passed his former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimoivic for that record. Cavani’s favorite opponent is Saint Etienne, against which he has scored 11 goals. Cavani has a reputation of not scoring in big matches, but as far as pure stats go, there are few better strikers.

USA draws 0-0 with Bosnia in first game since January Camp started

The first game of the new year for the USMNT was a 0-0 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Sunday at the StubHub Center. Since this was not a FIFA official international break, neither team had their full squad, though the U.S. is still figuring out what that is in the wake of not making the World Cup. The game was not great, with neither team really able to get much rhythm or generate many chances. Jeff Carlisle of ESPN talks about the good and the bad for the U.S. from this game.

West Brom knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup 3-2

Liverpool are a profoundly confusing team this season. After coming off arguably the most impressive win in all of the Premier League this year, the 4-3 victory over Manchester City, Liverpool followed that up with losses to bottom table Swansea and now West Brom in the FA Cup. It was the same old story for the Reds, defensive lapses cost them, and in this game their high powered attack was not enough to overcome that. Liverpool actually took the lead through a lovely chip by Roberto Firmino, but then found themselves behind soon after on a brace by Jay Rodriguez. West Brom added a third right before the break, and Mo Salah got one back in the second half, but that’s all Liverpool could muster. It’s clear that signing Virgil van Dijk is not the cure all for Liverpool’s defensive woes. Jurgen Klopp will need to figure out what is, so Liverpool can try and make a push for a league title next year.
