Los Angeles Football Club have made their first move of the 2019 season, announcing on Wednesday they have acquired defender Eddie Segura on a six-month loan beginning in January, with a purchase option.
The 21-year-old most recently played at Atlético Huila, in Colombia’s top flight, where he captained the side to a fourth-place finish. He began his career at Deportivo Pereira
“At such a young age, Eddie has accumulated a wealth of experience in Colombia, and we believe he has the requisite potential and qualities to make an immediate impact to our backline next season.” said general manager and EVP of soccer operations John Thorrington in a team statement. “Eddie is a strong, dynamic defender who fits well with how we play, and, similar to our other players, will continue his progress as a player here in Los Angeles.”
Segura is a center back, a position of need for LAFC this offseason, with all three of the remaining players on the 2018 roster — Walker Zimmerman, Dejan Jakovic, and Danilo Silva — reportedly either out of contract at the end of the year or with their loan done and the club left to make a decision on continuing on with the player. While it’s possible one or all of that trio does return in the end, even three CBs could use reinforcements.
Fairly or not, the history of Colombian center backs in MLS has been mixed. That being said, just because previous players from a given country at a given position have worked out or not, that doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on the new signing. Plus, he’ll have a compatriot at the club in Eduard Atuesta. And one figures this signing comes from the recommendation of Juan Pablo Angel, who was put in charge of scouting South America for LAFC ahead of the debut season.
