The final home game of the 2018 season is here for Orange County SC on Saturday, when they host Phoenix Rising FC in the Western Conference Final at Orange County Great Park.
Both teams are looking to reach the USL Cup Final for the first time, set to take place on Thursday in Louisville, Ken. against defending USL Cup champions Louisville City FC.
These teams met three times during the regular season. Somewhat poetically, Orange County’s first home game of the season, the season opener, was against Phoenix, with the teams finishing in a 1-1 draw. At the end of June, the teams met in Phoenix, with the home side winning 1-0. And then they met once again in Arizona in mid-August, with OCSC winning 4-3 in a wild game.
So 1-1-1 for these teams against each other this year, equal number of goals scored. Can’t get much closer than this.
The biggest wrinkle into all of this is that Didier Drogba, who missed all of the previous games against Orange County this year, has returned to the team and is playing in the playoffs, and is proving effective. Drogba scored from way downtown against Orange County last year, so he’s capable of it, and he looks motivated. OC can’t ignore him, or the other attacking options, like former OC Blues player Chris Cortez or Solomon Asante.
Biggest game in team history. Want to catch the game in person? Head to the OCSC website or email Orange County supporters group County Line Coalition (Countylinecoalition@yahoo.com) ASAP. It should be a huge night in team history, and if they win, OCSC’s special season will continue.
Tale of the Tape:
Orange County SC: 2 playoff wins; Goal Difference: +5; Seed: No. 1
Phoenix Rising FC: 2 playoff wins; Goal Difference: +5; Seed: No. 3
