Orange County SC 2018 Player Postmortem: Nansel Selbol

A golazo and the young attacker was on his way.

Nansel Selbol was a highly-touted signing for Orange County SC coming into the 2018 season. Following two seasons at Swope Park Rangers, where he played regularly and scored at a decent clip, the then-20 year old looked to be a fantastic pick-up for the USL outfit.

In the end, his stint in Orange County was abbreviated, as after playing in eight games in the league, Selbol left the team after the parties “mutually agreed to part ways” in late June.

The winger/wide forward had been a semi-regular from April-June for OCSC under Braeden Cloutier, and while he was largely quiet overall, he had one very notable game.

The Nigerian scored a golazo for OCSC in their 3-0 405 Derby win over LA Galaxy II on April 7, his first stint on the field for his new team.

With a banger like that, it was easy to get excited, but Selbol’s eventful night wasn’t yet complete. He picked up his lone yellow card of his time in Southern California in the same game, and had to be carted off the field after a scary collision late in the match that brought the full medical team to evaluate the unmoving Selbol. It was so concerning at the time I sent an inquiry to the team to check on his status, but on the bright side, they reported he suffered no serious injury and would be fine.

Aside from that, however, there wasn’t a ton of notable moments for him in orange and black.

It appears that Selbol remains a free agent, which may or may not indicate his playing days are behind him. Sometimes, it doesn’t work out at a team and it takes time to find a new situation, and sometimes a player, like the rest of us working stiffs, get tired of the grind or have something come up in another facet of one’s life, and needs to make a change. He appears to have gone home to Nigeria after leaving the team. What’s in store for his future? We shall see.
