Major League Soccer released the 2019 home openers for all 24 teams on Thursday. Los Angeles Football Club will begin their 2019 regular-season slate agains the opponent they finished the 2018 regular-season against, Sporting Kansas City, on Sunday, March 3 at Banc of California Stadium.
The opener will be an interesting one for LAFC, as Sporting Kansas City has beaten them twice in the teams’ two meetings to date, including the first home loss LAFC ever suffered. Sporting have been busy wheeling and dealing on the trade market lately, so I expect them to be among the contenders in the West again in 2019. Let’s hope LAFC will be one of those contenders, too, in their second season.
The full schedule will be released in the coming weeks, but one other home opener that has LAFC involved was revealed: The Portland Timbers’ first home game of the season will come on June 1 (yes, you read that right) due to renovations at Providence Park. The Timbers were another tricky opponent for LAFC in 2018, and with a rivalry starting to form between the two teams, this is a game to be circled on your calendars as well.
