Diego Rossi had a good game on Saturday for Los Angeles Football Club. So did a lot of LAFC players, considering it was a 5-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
But Rossi had a special game. All told, he had two goals, and three assists on the day, which you can probably gather equates to all five of LAFC’s goals. That’s not normal production by MLS standards. In fact, it’s damn near historic:
Diego Rossi of @LAFC had 2 goals and 3 assists in his team's 5-1 win vs. Real Salt Lake, just the sixth time in #MLS history a player was involved in 5 goals in a game.

It happened last 10/23/2008, when Chris Rolfe did it for Chicago. The first four all happened 2001 or earlier
It’s been just under a decade since an MLS player was involved in five goals in one game! Wow.
Now, of course there are players who play well who may not have the statistical impact of involvement in five goals in a game. And there have been a few players who have scored four or more goals in an MLS game. But direct involvement in five goals, scoring or assists, is not common. It was truly remarkable.
Rossi has started his MLS career with a bang, and through just two weeks leads the league in goals and assists. Long may it continue.
Check out the highlights of Saturday’s win once again:
