Diego Rossi was named MLS Player of the Week on Tuesday for Week 2 of the MLS season, after the Los Angeles Football Club forward scored two goals and three assists in a 5-1 road win over Real Salt Lake.
The Uruguayan, who also scored LAFC’s first-ever goal the week before in their inaugural game, has played a role in 100 percent of his team’s goals through two games. The RSL game was so impressive, it was the first performance of its kind in MLS in nearly 10 years.
It’s an impressive start for Rossi in MLS. While he got a bit of hype coming into the league, for the most part the novelty of LAFC as an expansion team, the star power of teammate Carlos Vela, and the wave of young South Americans signing in MLS this offseason put Rossi under the radar a bit. No longer. He leads the league in both goals and assists at the moment, albeit just two weeks into the season.
MLS Player of the Week is voted on by members of the North American Soccer Reporters (full disclosure: I am a member and voted this week).
Congratulations to Diego for the honor, and here’s hoping the good times continue for him and LAFC!
