U.S. Soccer announced on Wednesday the draw for the second round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup, when USL teams will first enter the competition.

Orange County SC will enter play in the knockout tournament on May 16, when they will host the winner of the FC Golden State Force-LA Wolves FC first-round game, which will take place May 9.

Both of those teams are familiar to OCSC, as they beat the both of them in the 2017 tournament, in consecutive rounds. First, they downed the PDL side Golden State Force 5-2, before squeaking out a 1-0 win over LA Wolves on a free kick. Orange County ended up facing the LA Galaxy in the fourth round, the USL team’s best run in the Open Cup in years after being knocked out at the first hurdle.

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest continuous soccer competition in the United States, and one of the oldest domestic competitions in the world. In addition to Orange County SC and five amateur teams that will enter in the first round (Orange County FC, Santa Ana Winds and La Maquina join Golden State Force and LA Wolves), two new professional Southern California teams, USL expansion side Fresno FC and MLS expansion team Los Angeles Football Club, will enter the tournament for the first time. Throw in LA Galaxy, and Southern California will see a total of nine Southern California teams will play in the field this year, out of a total of 94 teams. In other words, about a tenth of the field will be from this area. Will any make a deep run and/or win the whole thing? We will see later this year. First, though, is the first two rounds in about a month’s time.
