Orange County SC’s four-game winning streak was ended on Wednesday, as Rio Grande Valley FC defeated the Southern California outfit 2-0 at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas.
The first goal came in the 36th minute. Mac Steeves made a run along the sideline, skinned an OC defender, then crossed to Memo Rodriguez. The on-loan Houston Dynamo man jumped in front of Oscar Sorto right in front of goal, brought down the ball and scored easily. Orange County players protested a handball on the play from the scorer, but the play itself was worthy enough of a goal based on the quality in attack.
While OC pushed for a goal in the second half and had a few half-chances, RGVFC sealed the win when substitute Aldo Quintanilla tallied in the 89th minute to make it 2-0.
Even with the scoreline, and a huge edge in total shots by RGVFC on the night, Orange County held almost two-thirds possession in the game, held the edge in passing accuracy all over the field, and were much more successful in their tackles. But they looked just a step slow in thought and movement on the night, and Rio Grande Valley were hungry for a win. This may have been their first victory on the season, but they were the better team overall, statistics in OC’s favor or not.
Orange County won’t have much time to ponder the loss, as they’ll be back in action at home against Colorado Springs Switchbacks on Saturday, looking to kickstart another winning streak.
