I imagine some people who don’t read this story will think: ‘Why do a Man of the Match poll for a terrible loss?’ I hear you, it feels weird to honor players when it doesn’t seem like any were especially good on the game.
That seems to be the case for Los Angeles Football Club after their 5-0 thrashing by Atlanta United in Atlanta on Saturday. No team wants to get blown away, and LAFC did indeed struggle in all facets of the game.
But I think it’s worth having a poll no matter the result, because there’s often a player who tried to elevate the team’s play in a loss, and even if the result wasn’t great, it’s worth honoring him nonetheless.
So, let’s hear it: Who should be LAFC’s Man of the Match against Atlanta United? Angels on Parade staff has narrowed it to three candidates:
- Latif Blessing: Had five shots, including two that threatened goal. Wasn’t on the ball a lot but seemed to trouble Atlanta’s defense the most
- Benny Feilhaber: Almost drew a red card in the first minute (by the way, that was a red card, wasn’t it?)
- Carlos Vela: Notched the only shot on goal for LAFC. Had a muted impact by his lofty standards, but had a few key passes that should have led to shots on goal by teammates
