The first round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup took place this week, and several Southern California teams were involved.
PDL side FC Golden State Force defeated UPSL’s LA Wolves FC 3-1, while NPSL team Orange County FC defeated UPSL side Santa Ana Winds FC 3-0. The SoCal side that had to travel the farthest lost, as UPSL’s La Maquina fell 2-1 to PDL club FC Tucson in Arizona.
So the second round is set, and this is the round where independently-owned USL teams enter the fray (USL teams owned by MLS teams are ineligible to participate in the Open Cup). There are two games featuring Southern California teams: new USL side Fresno FC vs. Orange County FC in Clovis, and the USL side we cover, Orange County SC, against FC Golden State Force.
That game will be a rematch of an Open Cup game last year, when Orange County SC beat Golden State Force 5-2. Last time out, Golden State Force hosted the game, while this time around, OCSC will host the game, at Orange County Great Park, their first USOC game at their new home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm PT.
Can Orange County SC embark on another good Open Cup run this season? Will FC Golden State Force enact some revenge for last year’s loss? Will we somehow see a future game in which Orange County SC and Orange County FC play each other head-to-head? We’ll have to see what happens, but the schedule is set for the second round, and OCSC will hopefully have another good run in the oldest soccer competition in the United States.
