U.S. Soccer conducted the draw for the 3rd round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup on Monday, ahead of the 2nd round, which will be played midweek.
Of particular note, Orange County SC, who will play PDL side FC Golden State Force on Wednesday in the knockout tournament at Championship Soccer Stadium at Orange County Great Park, know who they’ll face in the next round if they beat Golden State Force.
While U.S. Soccer had to re-do the draw involving Orange County SC in light of a conflict of interest between other teams in the bracket, after doing it the second time and apparently finding no issues, OC’s next opponent, if they advance on Wednesday, will come from out of state:
So it will be a pretty tasty test, as the Las Vegas Lights have been one of the most interesting expansion teams we’ve ever seen, are coached by former Chivas USA boss Chelís and his son, and field former Orange County SC midfielder Carlos Alvarez. FC Tucson, meanwhile, may play in the PDL but they’ve been a solid outfit for years and they have experience playing opponents up the pyramid through their annual MLS preseason tournament.
But, as I’ve tried to make clear, none of this matters unless Orange County SC beat FC Golden State Force this week. Here’s hoping they get the job done and go on another good run in the Open Cup this year.
