Orange County SC return from their bye in league play with another home game, on Saturday evening against Fresno FC.
The game is OC’s first since they lost in the U.S. Open Cup to local PDL side FC Golden State Force last week, but if they’re feeling bashful for losing to an amateur side, Golden State Force did beat another USL side, Las Vegas Lights, this week in the latest round of the knockout tournament.
But Orange County will face Fresno for the first time, as the expansion team is off to a decent start to their history. Constructed by former MLS head coach Frank Yallop, the roster is a mix of prospects, Vancouver Whitecaps loanees (Fresno is the Whitecaps’ USL affiliate after Vancouver shut down their own reserve team last fall), and savvy veterans. Of particular note is Argentine playmaker Juan Pablo Caffa, who moved over from Tulsa Roughnecks in the offseason, and after torching Orange County last season has had a few very good performances in his new surroundings.
It’s always hard to map out a game against a brand-new opponent, but Orange County will have to be eager to get a win again, after only winning one of their last five games across all competitions. Can they get back in gear with a vital home game? It should be an interesting game at the Great Park.
Tale of the Tape:
Orange County SC: 17 points (5-3-2), 5th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: +9; Last five games: D-L-W-L-W
Fresno FC: 12 points (2-3-6), 11th place in Western Conference; Goal Difference: -1; Last five games: L-D-L-D-D
