Los Angeles Football Club defender Omar Gaber and Liverpool striker Mo Salah both sat the bench and watched their Egyptian national team succumb to a last-minute header by Jose Gimenez as Uruguay handed Egypt a 1-0 loss in both teams’ World Cup opener in Russia Friday.

The Pharaohs nearly came out of the 90 minutes unscathed thanks to goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy who made key saves against Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani throughout the match.
Gaber, looking for his 23rd national team cap, last played in a 3-0 international friendly loss to Belgium earlier this month – where he played 11 minutes. He also played a full 90 minutes on March 25 in a 1-1 draw with Kuwait.
A tear in his abductor muscle has kept his national team action limited.
His next opportunity for action will be when Egypt will take on host Russia – a 5-0 winner over Saudi Arabia Thursday – on Tuesday.
