LAFC to host Portland Timbers in 2018 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals

Expansion team will look to extend first-ever USOC run.

Following the late dramatics of Los Angeles Football Club’s 3-2 win over Sacramento Republic FC in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night, comes the official details for the next round in the knockout tournament.

Following the draw done before the Round of 16, LAFC will host their quarterfinal round opponent, the Portland Timbers, at Banc of California Stadium. That game will come on Wednesday, July 18, confirmed by the Timbers on Wednesday night.

Interestingly, the scheduling means LAFC and the Timbers will play back-to-back, as they will also meet in MLS regular season play on July 15 at The Banc, So they’ll play on the Sunday, and then a few days later on Wednesday, at the same venue. You don’t see that...well, ever, in soccer.

These teams have met once before, with the Timbers defeating LAFC in regular season play on May 19 by a 2-1 scoreline at Providence Park in Portland.

While it’s possible Carlos Vela and/or Marco Ureña may just be coming back from the World Cup that week (the final is on July 15) and may not be available, LAFC Designated Player Andre Horta will be eligible to play and the squad should be close to full-strength for the Open Cup quarterfinal. LAFC are off to a good start in their first USOC, but there’s work to be done, with July 19 the next big game.
