Looking to make a splash in Russia, the Egyptian national team has named speedy defender Omar Gaber to its final 23-man roster for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Gaber is on loan with Los Angeles Football Club from FC Basel.

He will join Liverpool star Mohamed Salah in Group A, where Egypt hope to get out of the group stage for the first time in its history. Egypt will make its third appearance in the World Cup.

Gaber was first capped for Egypt in 2011 during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifications but sat out until being called back up for four friendlies in 2012 and 2013 where he played against Qatar, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Chile.

He finally found a regular place on the national team in 2015 when he played for Egypt during World Cup qualification through 2016 but he was on the bench in the team’s 2-1 loss to Cameroon in the 2017 Africa Cup final.

Gaber was also on the bench in all four 2017 World Cup qualifying matches but did play in two friendlies – a 1-0 loss to Greece and a 1-1 tie with Kuwait – in 2018.

An abductor muscle tear forced him out of three matches for LAFC to start the season, but he has played in seven matches for the Black-and-Gold.

Egypt will play in Group A along with host Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
