Another milestone arrives in Los Angeles Football Club’s season. This is their first U.S. Open Cup game, a tournament that doesn’t always get a lot of love, but can be a fun one, and is another opportunity to win a trophy.

Despite this being the club’s first U.S. Open Cup run, many people around the team are experienced in it.

Among others in the organization, Benny Feilhaber and Latif Blessing won the U.S. Open Cup last season with Sporting KC, and Bob Bradley won the U.S. Open Cup along with the MLS Cup with the Chicago Fire in 1998 and 2000.

This will be the first knockout game LAFC has played. It’s win or go home, so no settling for a draw or close loss.

The U.S. Open Cup is frequently used by MLS teams as a chance to rest some of their first choice players and give some experience to players that don’t play all that much.

Even though LAFC are sure to make some lineup changes, all indications are that the club are going to take this competition seriously. There’s really no reason not to, despite the urge to give a lot of the first team players some rest.

LAFC’s opponents are also in their debut season. Fresno FC just joined USL this year.

Right now they sit 11th in the Western Conference of USL, with a 3-4-6 record. So they have been a little up and down, which makes sense being an expansion club.

Two weekends ago Fresno FC lost to our very own Orange County SC 3-0. But last weekend Fresno FC smashed Seattle Sounders 2 4-0 at home.

For their first ever U.S. Open Cup opponents, LAFC couldn’t have hoped for much more then a USL team which also happens to be an expansion team.

Still, Fresno FC will surely be up for the game, and LAFC will need to perform well to move on in the competition.

Predicition: LAFC 3, Fresno FC 1.
