Update: LAFC announced the game will be on June 20, a Wednesday. Time still to be determined.
U.S. Soccer completed the draw for the 2018 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Thursday morning, and Los Angeles Football Club found out who they will face following their 2-0 win over Fresno FC on Wednesday.
LAFC will host Sacramento Republic FC at Banc of California Stadium, in two weeks, with the specific date to be determined.
Sacramento defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-1 in extra time on Wednesday, at Papa Murphy’s Park. Republic FC have also won over PDL side San Francisco City FC and fellow USL side Reno 1868 FC on this current cup run.
LAFC and Sacramento have met once before, albeit in a friendly, when the MLS side defeated SRFC 1-0 in LAFC’s final preseason friendly, on February 25. Joao Moutinho scored the lone goal in the game.
Of course, a preseason friendly is not a lot like a competitive game, and Sacramento will be up for the game. LAFC, however, should feel like they have a good opportunity to continue their cup run and move on to the quarterfinals.
And while the June 20 date isn’t totally set, as it could come between June 16-20, the impact is that LAFC’s “World Cup break” basically evaporates, as it comes between Saturday’s regular season game against the San Jose Earthquakes and the June 23 return to league action against Columbus Crew SC. However, would you rather have a couple weeks off or be in the hunt for a trophy? I’d take the latter option every single time.
