A game of inches: Colorado Springs Switchbacks 0, Orange County SC 1

A goal in the second minute made the difference, as Orange County SC picked up a 1-0 road win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Tuesday night at Weidner Field.

OC went ahead courtesy of forward Michael Seaton, who received a ball over the top from Jos Hooiveld and slotted a shot calmly past Switchbacks goalkeeper Steward Ceus.

The game had a new face in goal, Casey Beyers, presumably because of Andre Rawls’ injury picked up on Friday against Phoenix Rising FC. Beyers, in his second season with Orange County, picked up a clean sheet in his first appearance of the season in league play, making four saves on the night.

Orange County were mostly content to hold onto their lead after grabbing it, pushing Colorado Springs when they could but really staying cognizant to conserve energy on short rest in the altitude of Colorado Springs. That approach worked for the most part, but the game got pretty hairy in the final minutes.

With about 10 minutes to go, Switchbacks substitute Martin Maybin drew a penalty kick from Mats Bjurman. Jordan Burt stepped up from the spot to try and tie up the game, and missed the target wide left. All in all, OC dodged a bullet there, and while there were several late looks for Colorado Springs, they couldn’t get the ball in the net and Orange County held on.

The win vaults OC up to 4th place in the Western Conference, as they complete a season sweep against Colorado Springs. Braeden Cloutier’s men won’t have much time to reflect on this game, as they’ll be back in action on Saturday at home against LA Galaxy II in the final 405 Derby of the 2018 USL regular season.
