LAFC duo Vela, Ciman start for MLS All-Stars in draw vs. Juventus

All-Stars fall in penalty shootout.

The 2018 MLS All-Star Game took place on Wednesday, with the All-Star Team playing Juventus to a 1-1 draw, with the Serie A champion winning the subsequent penalty shootout 5-3.

Los Angeles Football Club’s representatives, forward Carlos Vela and defender Laurent Ciman, got the start, with Vela wearing the captain’s armband after the successful #VoteVela campaign on Twitter.

Juventus opened the scoring in the 21st minute, as Andrea Favilli headed in a cross by Matheus Pereira to beat Brad Guzan in goal.

But the All-Stars equalized five minutes later, with Vela playing a role. Josef Martinez headed an early cross at the far post back across the 6-yard box, and Vela hit a one-timer shot that forced a save from Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Ignacio Piatti pounced on the rebound to try and beat Szczesny from an impossible angle, but Martinez followed up the play to knock the ball in the net in front of his home crowd.

Vela and Ciman both exited the game at halftime, and hopefully neither felt a twinge or anything during the run-out in the All-Star Game.

No more goals the rest of the way, although both teams had good looks. The game went to a penalty shootout, with Juve converting all five of their spot kicks and Bradley Wright-Phillips hitting the post for the All-Stars.

So the MLS All-Star “break,” such as it is, is over, and LAFC will be back in action, no doubt with Vela and Ciman, on Sunday at Red Bull Arena to take on the New York Red Bulls for the first time.
