Precourt Sports Ventures has to wait a little while longer to see if their stadium framework in Austin is set. Austin’s City Council was set to vote on a deal which was agreed between PSV and city administrators, but public comments and 20 amendments over the course of two hours led to the council tabling the discussion until next Wednesday. The deal would have called for a soccer-specific stadium to be built 10 miles north of downtown Austin, with the team financing the stadium and paying $1 per year to the city to lease the land, with $550,000 in rent from the sixth year forward. There is even a non-relocation clause. Amendments to the sheet included increasing yearly payments to almost a million dollars per season and requiring PSV to fund the construction of a transportation site near the stadium.
In a move that surprises absolutely nobody, FC Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi will wear the captain’s armband this season, after Andres Iniesta departed the club for Japanese side Vissel Kobe this summer. Iniesta had the captaincy for two years since Xavi had left the club in 2015 to play in Qatar. Sergio Busquets will assume the role of second captain, which Messi had held before. The forward is the all-time leading scorer for the Blaugrana, with 552 goals in all competitions.
LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has called MLS’s rule that suspended the striker for a match after skipping the MLS All-Star Game ridiculous. Major League Soccer has a rule intended to encourage participation (or discourage non-participation) in the All-Star Game, saying that a player who skips the event when selected for the team is suspended for their next game with their club. Ibrahimovic announced that he would not participate in the showcase event in Atlanta after playing three games in nine days. He then did not have to travel across the country to Atlanta, only to have to return and play in Colorado on Saturday. The Galaxy ended up losing 2-1 to the Rapids.
“It think it is ridiculous, but yeah, no comments,” Ibrahimovic said. “They do whatever they want. I come from a different world, I come from the real world.
”It is what it is. I respect in the end, and I’m sorry for my teammates only that I could not help them in the game.
”But yeah, people are interested in different things. They lose on it, and for me it doesn’t matter.”
Ibrahimovic will be eligible to play against Minnesota United on Saturday.
