Orange County SC are five games unbeaten, and picked up four points this week, after beating Swope Park Rangers 2-1 at Championship Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
Orange County took the lead in the 16th minute. Michael Seaton received the ball in the box, and held off a defender as he allowed his teammates to get into the box. He spotted Darwin Jones making a run in, and sent over the pass, and Jones buried the shot to make it 1-0.
But Swope Park Rangers tied the game in the 20th minute, as Felipe Hernandez’s free kick went around the wall and beat OC goalkeeper Casey Beyers.
OCSC took the lead once again in the 43rd minute, and again through Jones, as his shot from outside of the box took a slight deflection off a Swope Park Rangers’ defender on its way in.
The second half was somewhat back-and-forth, but Orange County really worked to squeeze the impetus out of Swope Park, and overall they were successful at it. More importantly, OC maintained a lead to the final whistle, something they haven’t always been able to do with narrow leads, but they got the job done here.
The result keeps Orange County in 2nd place in the Western Conference, three points behind Real Monarchs in first place. There’s still plenty of time to go this season, but they are in good shape right now and look like they can truly be contenders if they keep this up. Their next game will be a good test, as they’ll be back in Arizona to take on Phoenix Rising next Saturday, a team they haven’t beaten yet this year. There’s no time like the near future!
