Top European coaches push for an change of the away goals rule, among other things

The top club coaches in UEFA have petitioned the governing body to change the away goals rule. The rule was implemented at a time when scoring on the road was much harder. Travel was slower and less accommodating, fields were not as good, and road atmospheres were very intimidating. Some of those things are still factors, some much less so. It would make sense to explore another tiebreaker for European games. Another major idea brought up the idea to unify the transfer deadline across the continent’s major leagues.

As the U.S. celebrates Dempsey, another in his likeness may not come by for a long time

Clint Dempsey was a tremendous soccer player. He scored an incredible amount of goals for club and country. But much more than his numbers, Dempsey was fun to watch. He was creative and fearless, and this caused him to try outrageous things on the field at times. As much as U.S. Soccer has been celebrating that over the last few days, it’s hard to see where the next Dempsey will come from. Soccer in this country is still incredibly expensive, and this inevitably means that it is a majority white sport. The journey Dempsey had to get to where he was, it’s hard to see who else could make it with those circumstances. And that’s a shame, in a country as big and diverse as ours is.

Roberto Mancini plays music during training, including Queen and the Rolling Stones

During Italy training this week, something is happening that has not happened there before. Music is being played during training over the loudspeakers. An interesting playlist, includng Queen, the Killers, Miley Cyrus, and the Rolling Stones could be heard throughout the practice. Considering Italy failed to make the most recent World Cup, anything and everything should be on the table when it comes to improving the team, including freshening up the playlist.
