It’s been an active week for Los Angeles Football Club on the off-field awards front. First, LAFC co-owner and president Tom Penn was announced as the 2018 Sports Executive of the Year from the Los Angeles Sports Council. He will be honored during the LA Sports Awards on March 25.
“I am truly honored to receive this prestigious award, and I do so on behalf of our dedicated and talented employees who do the work every day,” said Penn in a team statement. “Building LAFC and Banc of California Stadium has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I’m extremely proud of what the club has accomplished over the past year. We are grateful to be recognized within the L.A. sports landscape as we continue to unite the world’s city through the world’s game.”
Not only did LAFC fully launch in 2018, but they completed construction and opened Banc of California Stadium in their first season, becoming the first open air stadium to open in the city of Los Angeles since Dodger Stadium. So the work was not insignificant.
Penn has been around since the beginning and he’s done a lot of work over the years so it’s nice to see him honored for it.
In other news, MLS held their annual club and executive awards on Thursday in Chicago, and LAFC picked up a few honors there, too.
Rich Orosco was named Marketing Executive of the Year, and for those who’ve seen “LAFC Rich” around over the years, you know he does work to get the word out about the club.
In addition, LAFC won the club award for Corporate Partnerships of Year, and won for Business Analytics of the Year. Finally, they were recognized with the Expansion Club Recognition Award, which probably wasn’t especially competitive since they were the only expansion club. But seriously, I think the award was meant to recognize how well they did in year one, which was pretty good, especially by MLS standards.
So congratulations to Penn, Orosco and the departments at the club honored and keep up the good work.
