Benny Feilhaber signs Free Agent deal with Colorado Rapids

Midfielder exits LAFC after one season.

Following a report from Sam Stejskal on Thursday that Benny Feilhaber would sign an MLS Free Agent deal with the Colorado Rapids, the deal was confirmed by the Rapids on Friday, as Feilhaber signed a one-year deal with an option for 2020.

Feilhaber, 33, reportedly signed a deal for just under the maximum amount he could have earned, which likely explains why he didn’t sign for Los Angeles Football Club for a second season.

Feilhaber was almost ever-present for LAFC in 2018, playing in 38 games, all but one competitive match across all competitions for the club, after being traded from Sporting Kansas City. He had a longtime connection to Bob Bradley, and he played quite well in a difficult position, where LAFC did not deploy a traditional defensive midfielder.

But at 33, Feilhaber knew he would have a market around the league, and I figured LAFC would ask him to take a pay cut. He didn’t, as the Rapids offered him a lot of money. I am guessing LAFC are disappointed he won’t come back, but likely expected there was a good chance he wouldn’t return.

So that’s that. Will this be the Andre Horta era, or will LAFC look to bring in another midfielder this offseason? We’ll see.
