U.S. Soccer announced the rosters for the recent tradition, of convening the U.S. U-20, U-19 and U-17 National Teams in one megacamp in January, and a local pro is part of the call-ups.
Orange County SC goalkeeper Aaron Cervantes was called up to the U-17 roster for the training camp, which began on Thursday in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and runs through Jan. 13. He’s one of four goalkeepers in that squad and by my count one of seven players on a pro contract in MLS or USL Championship or League One at present.
Cervantes, signed by Orange County ahead of the 2018 season, did not play any competitive first-team minutes in his first season, although that’s not altogether surprising given his tender age. The youngster is highly touted by the USL Championship organization but he may still need some seasoning before playing pro minutes. We’ll see what happens this season.
At any rate, the call-up is good for Cervantes and may mean he’s in the reckoning for the Concacaf U-17 Championship this spring, we’ll have to see on that front as well.
