Los Angeles Football Club had a historic night on a couple accounts on Thursday, as they defeated the LA Galaxy 5-3 — their first-ever win over the El Trafico rivals — and picked up their first-ever MLS Playoffs win in the process, in their second such game.
LAFC, who as the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed had a bye in the first round of the playoffs this year, have now won a playoff game, and gotten past their bogeyteam to do it. It has to offer a massive mental edge for the black-and-gold.
Their reward? Another game, the Western Conference final, where they’ll host the Seattle Sounders at Banc of California Stadium on Tuesday evening. LAFC have had a good history to date with the Sounders, going 3-0-1 all-time in two years against Seattle, including a 1-0-1 record this year, and a 2-0-0 record all-time at The Banc.
But the Sounders have a lot of experience and after a wobble in their first playoff game this year, they seem to be getting stronger. Don’t expect Brian Schmetzer’s side to roll over, especially with the momentum of two playoff wins this year so far.
At the same time. LAFC are now two wins away from winning MLS Cup. They got over the first hurdle Thursday night, making history in the process two ways. And they’ll get to keep their season alive and gear up for the next test in less than a week’s time.
