One game down, two to go if Los Angeles Football Club want to raise MLS Cup in 2019. Their next test comes in the Western Conference Final, where they will host the Seattle Sounders at The Banc on Tuesday evening.
Spirits are high for LAFC after last week’s LA Galaxy win, the biggest in club history to date considering the opponent and the stage. But attention must turn to the Sounders, who LAFC have an unbeaten 3-0-1 record all-time against, and they must ensure that they don’t mentally relax too much after the last game, and let the Sounders coast through and get the win.
At the same time, the Sounders are playing better than the last time LAFC faced them, way back in April, and coming off two playoff wins on the trot, they will be eager to do to LAFC what LAFC just did to the Galaxy, getting that first win over the opponent in the playoffs.
Seattle’s first two playoff games were at their home, beating FC Dallas 4-3 over 120 minutes in Round One, a wild and crazy game highlighted by Jordan Morris’ first career hat trick, before dispatching Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference semifinals in far more comfortable fashion, 2-0 in 90 minutes.
The Sounders have the experience of making runs to MLS Cup. LAFC have the experience of beating the Sounders, often in very tight circumstances. The No. 1 seed vs. the No. 2 seed in the West, this is the kind of games the top teams want to play.
And as it’s a single-elimination format, it’s 90 minutes (or possibly 120) to win it. The winning team moves on, the losing team goes home, the season is over. With just one game to MLS Cup, everything is on the line, and we’ll see if LAFC can book The Banc for MLS Cup, or if the Sounders will spring the big upset in the biggest moment.
Prediction: LAFC 3, Sounders 1. It won’t be easy, there will be tense moments, but the black-and-gold will prevail and the quest for MLS Cup will remain on track in LA.
