Three Los Angeles Football Club players — forward Carlos Vela, midfielder Eduard Atuesta and defender Walker Zimmerman — have been named to the 2019 MLS Best XI, announced by Major League Soccer on Monday.
Vela, 30, is the favorite to capture MLS MVP this season and this is his second career MLS Best XI honor. Breaking the MLS single-season scoring record with 34 goals, Vela also notched 15 assists, one of the league leaders in that category as well, as LAFC tied a longtime MLS record for goals scored in a season by a team. Vela also served as captain, lifting his first piece of club silverware with the 2019 Supporters’ Shield.
Atuesta, 22, was the midfield metronome for LAFC in 2019. The Colombian played a fantastic two-way game in midfield, balancing defensive responsibilities with attacking contributions, scoring three goals and 11 assists, including the clinching free kick goal to capture the Supporters’ Shield. Atuesta is unquestionably one of the rising stars of MLS.
Zimmerman, 26, balanced responsibilities for club and country in 2019, finding a breakthrough with the U.S. Men’s National Team while helping marshal a substantial improvement in LAFC’s defense. All told, the black-and-gold conceded the fewest goals in the league, 37, and Zimmerman tallied a goal and an assist, scoring the late winner over Real Salt Lake early in the season.
These Best XI selections join Bob Bradley’s MLS Coach of the Year award for LAFC’s honors in 2019.
Congratulations to Carlos, Eduard and Walker for the selections, and good luck to LAFC as they continue their quest to win MLS Cup.
