The playoff field is set for MLS in 2019, and Los Angeles Football Club know who they will play in their opening game.
LAFC will host the winner of the Minnesota United FC vs. LA Galaxy game. That first game will take place on Oct. 20 in St. Paul, while LAFC’s game will happen at The Banc on Oct. 24. Those who don’t have season tickets will have to wait for information to come out about when tickets go on sale for the match.
The format of the playoffs this season is a single-elimination format. As the top seed in the Western Conference, LAFC have a bye for the first round, and will enter the fray in the Western Conference semifinal. If they advance, they’d host the Western Conference final, and if they advance from that game, they would host MLS Cup on Nov. 10.
Notably, Minnesota and the Galaxy are the only Western Conference teams LAFC did not beat in 2019, posting a combined 0-2-2 record against them. On the bright side, LAFC drew both teams in their second meetings this year, but both teams have shown they can beat LAFC. Some have argued LAFC, in spite of being the top seed, have perhaps their least ideal scenario for the playoffs.
This seems like the toughest possible draw LAFC could get. They're a combined 0-2-2 against Minnesota and Galaxy, while they're 6-0-2 combined against the West's other four playoff teams.— Jeremiah Oshan (@JeremiahOshan) October 7, 2019
However, you can play the games you have, so LAFC have to beat whichever side they encounter if they want to win MLS Cup this year. Them’s the breaks, but it could also make it all the more sweeter if they beat one of their bogey teams in the playoffs.
