During the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft on Tuesday, Inter Miami selected Los Angeles Football Club midfielder Lee Nguyen with their third pick. In exchange, LAFC will receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money, and the remaining LAFC players were taken off the table for selection for the rest of the Expansion Draft.
Nguyen, 33, spent most of the 2018 season and all of 2019 with LAFC, making 48 regular-season appearances with the black-and-gold, scoring three goals and nine assists. The attacking midfielder, not known for his defensive chops when traded from New England Revolution, underwent a transformation where he became a much more two-way midfielder for Bob Bradley.
That said, Nguyen was always the first guy off the bench in midfield, a player who deserved more playing time than he got but also due to injuries and form fell lower in the pecking order. Credit to the veteran for embracing his role, but he’ll likely be excited to potentially get more playing time, and near Miami. It could be worse!
LAFC fans are likely to lament Nguyen’s departure, and while he played a good role for the team in his time here, he was never truly indispensable. For their part, the club will likely be bummed he’s moving on, but willing to live with it. It’s the nature of the business.
Thanks for the contributions, Lee, and best of luck with Inter Miami.
