Rumor: FC Barcelona have offer out for Carlos Vela? Barça deny it

Here we go again...

Carlos Vela was linked to a move to FC Barcelona last January, and the Los Angeles Football Club superstar is once more linked to the European giant.

beIN Sports reported on Wednesday that LA Galaxy and Mexico midfielder Jonathan dos Santos, who knows Vela well, claimed in a radio interview with Colombian outlet W Radio that Vela has a new offer on the table from Barcelona.

“As I am now on vacation, I have not had much contact with him.

”But it is true, he has that offer on the table [from Barcelona]. I don’t know what he’s going to do.

”He’s very happy in Los Angeles, he had a spectacular season, but Barca looking for you is a very nice opportunity.

”I’m happy for him. As a Mexican, I hope this possibility can be given.”

Vela, 30, had the finest season in MLS history in 2019, scoring 34 goals and 15 assists in 31 regular-season appearances, captaining MLS to their first piece of silverware, the Supporters’ Shield, and being named MLS MVP and an MLS Best XI selection.

He has admitted he wanted to go to Barcelona last time they came calling, but apparently LAFC convinced him to stay and on top of that, stoked a fire under him to play his best for the black-and-gold.

But ESPN reported that Barcelona have “categorically denied” interest in Vela, and furthermore, have no plans to make any big signings in January unless there’s a major injury or the like.

What to make of this? It’s plausible Barcelona could want an experienced player like Vela to help weather the transition between the old heads and the youngsters coming through, but ESPN’s report refuting the alleged offer would seem to rule out the likelihood of it happening.

From LAFC’s perspective, you have to think they wouldn’t want Vela to go and if anyone comes sniffing would do everything they can to keep him, especially with Concacaf Champions League coming up in a couple months. I’d say this is a wait and see situation to see if it gains any steam in the American press, but at the moment it looks like Vela won’t make the move to Barcelona in the next transfer window.
