Los Angeles Football Club announced on Monday they have added defender Niko Hamalainen on a six-month loan from Queens Park Rangers.
Hamalainen, 21, is a Finnish-American who plays as a wide defender. He’ll likely be depth at left back behind Jordan Harvey and Mohamed El-Munir, but who knows — perhaps he can push on to get some minutes in the first half of the season.
“Niko has a bright future ahead of him and we look forward to furthering his professional development at LAFC,” said general manager and EVP of soccer operations John Thorrington in a statement. “I am confident he will prove to be a valuable addition to the group.”
Hamalainen is from Miami, so he won’t take up an international roster slot. He hasn’t been a regular for QPR, but has made a handful of appearances in league and cup play for them and for a team further down the EFL, Dagenham & Redbridge, when he previously played on loan.
The youngster is also a Finnish international, coming through the youth ranks and making his senior debut in a friendly in January.
LAFC kick off the 2019 season on Sunday against Sporting Kansas City.
