Los Angeles Football Club announced on Friday night they have signed 2019 MLS Draft pick Peter-Lee Vassell. The club’s top SuperDraft pick this year (No. 40 overall), he actually has played two years as a professional already, for Harbour View in his native Jamaica.
The 19-year-old is already a senior Jamaica international, scoring an impressive five goals in nine caps to date for his country. He will take up an international slot for LAFC, which is not particularly a concern because LAFC have been doing work on the international slot front this offseason.
With Vassell’s signing, LAFC’s roster is up to 28 players ahead of the 2019 MLS regular season, which opens on Sunday at Banc of California Stadium against Sporting Kansas City. That means the club has two roster slots still open for signings, and one name that hung around preseason the whole way but hasn’t been signed is another LAFC draft pick, midfielder Javi Perez. Is his addition merely delayed or has the team decided not to sign him? Hard to say since there hasn’t been word so far. We’ll see.
