Los Angeles Football Club announced on Thursday they have loaned defender Lamar Batista to USL Championship club Phoenix Rising FC, ahead of their season opener this weekend.
Batista, 21, signed with LAFC after a successful trial at the club. The center back has considerable competition on the depth chart, however, with Walker Zimmerman, Eddie Segura, Danilo Silva, Dejan Jakovic and perhaps also Tristan Blackmon ahead of him. So going to Phoenix will give him a chance to play some games, and he has plenty of USL experience, after playing for the Portland Timbers 2 the last two seasons. And he’s spent the preseason splitting his time between LAFC and Phoenix, so this loan move isn’t a surprise. Don’t be surprised if there are a few more loans out this season for the black-and-gold.
LAFC have the ability to recall Batista from his loan at any time, something they did last year with loans to Phoenix for Blackmon, Shaft Brewer, Jr. and Josh Perez. Phoenix went to the USL Cup final last year, and are expected to be a contender again in 2019. They open the season on Saturday in Texas against San Antonio FC.
Also, it’s Lamar’s birthday on Thursday. Happy birthday to him and best of luck in Arizona.
