Carlos Vela scored his first hat trick in MLS on Saturday, in a 5-0 romp over the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium, and that haul, plus an assist, was good enough for Vela to be voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 5 of the 2019 season.
Vela capitalized on an early error from San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vega, then walked the ball in the net to open the scoring. He notched his second goal in first-half stoppage time from Diego Rossi’s cross. He then scored a golazo in the second half, a trademark left-footed curler from distance, to complete the hat trick. Vela then assisted Rossi’s goal two minutes later to complete the production on the day.
It’s Vela’s second MLS Player of the Week award so far this season, after he took the honors in Week 2. The man says he wants to be MLS MVP, and with six goals and three assists to lead or co-lead in both categories through the first month, he’s off to a fantastic start.
Vela also received an MLS Team of the Week nod and is nominated for MLS Goal of the Week (vote here). So all in all, a very good week for the LAFC star.
