Orange County SC and FC Cincinnati announced on Wednesday that Cincinnati have loaned midfielder Frankie Amaya to OCSC on a month-long loan. FC Cincy have the right of recall at any time.
Amaya, 18, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 MLS Draft by Cincinnati out of UCLA. A local native, the midfielder is from Santa Ana, and the loan stint is intended to give him game action ahead of the U-20 World Cup this summer.
“We feel this short-term move will provide Frankie the best possible opportunity to accelerate his development ahead of a busy summer schedule,” FC Cincinnati technical director Luke Sassano said in a team statement. “We’ve been very pleased with how Frankie has not only performed the pitch, but also how he has adapted to being in a professional environment this season. We believe this move aligns with everyone’s best interests in both the immediate and long-term futures.”
Amaya has made two appearances in MLS so far, playing 21 minutes, including a seven-minute stint off the bench for FC Cincinnati against Los Angeles Football Club on Saturday. Reportedly Amaya stayed behind in SoCal after the game to join OCSC, and now he’ll be in the mix for Braeden Cloutier, starting on Saturday as Orange County take on OKC Energy FC in Oklahoma City.
