Orange County SC looked to the second month of the 2019 USL Championship season looking to change their fortunes after a winless March, and found immediate success, as they defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 2-0 on Saturday night at Championship Soccer Stadium.
Darwin Jones had a brace for the home side to propel the win.
Braeden Cloutier stuck with most of the group from last week’s game in El Paso, with Kontor Owusu-Ansah getting the start in place of Joe Amico. Michael Seaton also got the start, as he was able to go for a normal shift.
Orange County took the lead in the 42nd minute, as a free kick from Jerry van Wolfgang was headed in on the doorstep by Darwin Jones.
Jones grabbed a second goal in the 57th minute, as his deflected shot knuckled and fooled young Colorado Springs goalkeeper Abraham Rodriguez to make it 2-0 for Orange County.
A welcome sight came in the 58th minute, as midfielder Aodhan Quinn came off the bench after missing the last few games. His absence, along with Seaton’s had been noticeable as Orange County struggled in the opening weeks.
Aside from picking up three points, Orange County also posted their first shutout of the season, with Patrick McLain, in his second appearance in this stint with the club, looking much more assured this week in goal and the defense getting more familiarity with one another.
So Orange County move up a few places in the standings with the win, and they’ll have a short turnaround before their next game, on Wednesday at home against Tacoma Defiance (formerly Seattle Sounders 2). Can they keep the good run going? Stay tuned!
