Los Angeles Football Club begin their weirdest two-game set in the 2019 regular season — yes, weirder even than the back-to-back against the Seattle Sounders — with a home game against FC Dallas on Thursday, before the teams play again in Texas on Sunday.
Dallas are one of a few teams LAFC have yet to beat in their history, with the teams drawing once and FCD winning the other matchup in 2018. We know in MLS anything can happen, but LAFC seem to be catching Dallas at a favorable moment, as several players are dealing with injuries and several more out on international duty, most notably Paxton Pomykal, who is dealing with both but will technically be available for Dallas this week.
LAFC, meanwhile, have only two reserve midfielders, Javi Perez and Alejandro Guido, on the injury report and it will be interesting to see if Bob Bradley will opt for some squad rotation — a decision that didn’t work last time he tried it — or will go with the first-choice group until the Gold Cup break comes in a little over two weeks. Given the break is coming, I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to keep the foot on the gas and keep changes limited for the time being.
With LAFC in first place right now, and with a four-point cushion ahead of the midweek action around MLS, they’re in a good spot right now, but we know they are determined to keep picking up wins, and will look to get that first W over the coming opposition.
Prediction: LAFC 2, FC Dallas 0. The black-and-gold continue their trend of getting stymied, but the dam will break at some point and they’ll get the win. I would expect Dallas to punt a bit on this game and put more of their eggs in the second game on Sunday.
