The official injury report has been released and with it comes good news to Los Angeles Football Club. On May the 4th, LAFC will be able to “use the force”, as Adama Diomande, Rodolfo Zelaya and Andre Horta are all available for selection. However, it is important to note that Diomande will likely not be rushed back to action until he is fully fit. Josh Gross of the So Cal News Group reported this week that Bob Bradley said, “Dio needs more time to build strength.” Given the amount of time that he was sidelined with his hamstring strain, the training staff will be following a protocol that will determine his ability to return to sport. A similar protocol can be found below as an example of what that process looks like:

In addition to Diomande, both Andre Horta and Fito Zelaya will have likely gone under a similar protocol to assess their readiness to return to the pitch. Bradley also noted per Josh Gross that “Andre Horta has turned a corner [and] Fito Zelaya has shown more in training.” This is good news and likely points to the last bit of the rehabilitation where they are looking to complete all soccer-related activities without any pain or hesitation. Given their lengthy stints on the injury list, I would expect their minutes to be managed accordingly. However, given the return to the favored grass field at the Banc of California Stadium, I would expect them both to be in line for possible selection if the game allows. Their return to fitness should see the team get some needed depth heading into the rest of the season.

Maybe the most important person to be missing from this report is defender Steven Beitashour, who missed last week’s game in Seattle with knee soreness. Given his injury, he the playing surface may have played a role and we should see his return to action this Saturday. However, his importance has never been more clear as all the games LAFC has dropped points have come in his absence. With this in mind, I would expect the training staff to proceed with caution, as the team can ill-afford to lose him for any extended periods of time.

With a tough run of games leading up to the Gold Cup break, LAFC will likely ease everyone back into the lineup. However, it is nonetheless good news that Diomande, Horta and Zelaya will soon get their chance to make an impact on the team.
